Natural Stone Staircases in the UAE: Specification, Nosing Details, and What Most Projects Get Wrong

A stone staircase is one of the most punishing applications in any building. It combines high foot traffic with impact loading, edge stress, cleaning chemicals, and — in the UAE — the constant transition between air-conditioned interiors and humid exteriors that accelerates deterioration in ways that flat flooring never has to deal with.
Despite this, staircase stone is often specified as an afterthought: the same material as the lobby floor, extended upward, with a nosing profile decided by the contractor on site.
The results tend to show within three to five years.
Why stairs demand a separate specification
The tread is the most stressed element in any stone staircase. Every footfall delivers an impact load concentrated at the nosing edge — the front 50 to 80mm of the tread. This edge is also the most exposed: it receives direct foot traffic, is vulnerable to trolley and luggage impact in hospitality settings, and is the zone most affected by cleaning equipment.
Stone that performs well as floor tiling may have neither the flexural strength nor the edge integrity to survive as a stair tread, particularly in thinner formats. A 20mm marble tile that works on a flat floor will chip, crack, and delaminate at the nosing within a few years of staircase use.
The riser — the vertical face between treads — is less structurally demanding but presents its own challenges. Riser joints that open as the staircase structure settles are a maintenance problem and, in some configurations, a safety one.
Nosing: the detail that determines longevity
The nosing profile is where most staircase specifications fail. There are three broad approaches: a square edge, a bullnose, and an anti-slip insert.
A square edge on a stone nosing looks sharp and contemporary. It is also the fastest to deteriorate. The 90-degree arris concentrates all impact and wear at a single point, and even hard stones like granite will show damage within a few years in a high-traffic setting.
A bullnose profile distributes the impact across a radius, which significantly improves longevity. The radius should be generous — a 10mm radius minimum, with 15 to 20mm preferred for commercial settings. Smaller radii still concentrate stress; they just look like they don't.
Anti-slip inserts — typically aluminium or carborundum strips set into a routed groove at the nosing — address slip resistance directly and can extend tread life by protecting the leading edge. In the UAE's hospitality market, where marble treads in hotel lobbies and amenity areas are the norm, this combination of bullnose profile and inset anti-slip strip is the specification we recommend most often.
Thickness matters more on stairs than on floors
Thirty millimetres is the absolute minimum tread thickness we recommend for any commercial staircase application in natural stone. For marble and limestone, 40mm is preferable. For cantilevered treads — where the tread is structurally unsupported at its outer edge — the calculation is entirely project-specific and must be confirmed by a structural engineer working with the stone consultant.
The relationship between thickness, span, and fixings is not intuitive, and it cannot be determined from finish samples or supplier data sheets alone.
The transition between interior and exterior
In UAE buildings where stone staircases transition between conditioned and unconditioned spaces — a hotel's entrance sequence, for example, or a villa's pool terrace stair — the specification must account for the moisture and temperature differential that occurs at the boundary.
Stone that absorbs water from pool or garden contexts and then moves into a conditioned interior will experience repeated cycles of wetting, drying, and temperature change. This accelerates staining, efflorescence, and — in porous stones — physical deterioration.
The specification for this zone requires a different material choice, a different surface finish, and a different sealing regime than the interior staircase above it.
Getting the brief right from the start
The best time to involve a stone consultant in a staircase project is during schematic design, when tread dimensions, riser heights, and structural approaches are still being determined. At this stage, material, format, thickness, and nosing profile can all be optimised together.
By the time the staircase structure is built and the contractor is asking which stone to order, the window for proper specification has already closed.
